It is lil' past 7 in the morning and realize something. I've been a Deviant-Artist for 3 years now and I still haven't posted a single good piece of artwork on this site. I think posting on this site wasn't a good idea in the first place. Maybe I should probably thrash this account and move on to more funnier things in life.
Last week I had to interview an artist for a English assignment that I'm still currently working on. The artist was a Public Sculptor in my hometown of Greensboro NC I will leave his name anonymous. Even though the assignment had nothing to do with my major Graphic Design but me and him were fellow artist so I understand him on a general artist level. I will repeat almost the same thing he told me about having a career as a artist.
"Art isn't a job but a mission" what he told me. Being a artist isn't all about being famous or getting money but if you choice this career path for this then you are SCREW!!! A sculptor that is self-employed have to at least work around 17 years before getting a profit. So it would take a while to actually make a living as a artist in other fields. Plus you have to be able to take criticism and rejection without mouth/ being crushed because if you're sensitive or have a arrogant attitude you only show to your clients how inexperience and foolish you are in the workforce. You're clients are paying you to make their ideas into a two to three dimensional reality for whatever reason so you have to consider that. Now if you are just selling a piece of art you still have to consider your audience and your art's subject matter and how this plays a important part of how soon a individual, company, group, etc will buy your artwork. Along with being a artist you have to or should develop your Liberal Art Skills.
Liberal Arts is your reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. These are also crucial in giving oral or written presentations, writing artist statements, proposals, RFQs or Request of Qualifications, Resumes, and more. You want to give the idea that you are over qualified for what you are going for. Now, one of the most important things to talk about is rendering the human body. If you can this you then the possibilities are endless. Honing your skills constantly, practice to the point that you can draw a horse upside down. Most artists are practicing their craft regardless if it is for a client. Nobody can't afford to be behind on the newest techniques, materials, and whatnot because that will cost them money. And we all like money, right? So talking to that Sculptor shed some light in what I need to do and one of the first things is that a Graphic Design career isn't the path I should walking on. GD is nice and all but getting a job in this economic is hard and looking at Portfolio Day proves it, few ppl than last year showed up and I still keep in contact with some of them and they still haven't found a GD job yet. Knowing about job careers that are on the rise is important because having a stable position in the workforce for several years is nice to have. I'm thinking about Web Design or Animation.
Well I better be getting some assignments finish now, waiting to the last minute is stressful.
Have a good day or nite all
